Fortunately, today patients have several conservative options that can help to alleviate the debilitating symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Though patients with more severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome may require surgery, many people can achieve pain relief through non-surgical carpal tunnel treatment options. Depending on the specific cause of CTS, our hand specialists may recommend the following non-surgical treatment for carpal tunnel.
At the Hand Surgery Center of Excellence in Beverly Hills, our physicians always try to utilize non-surgical treatment options for carpal tunnel, before turning to surgery. If you wish to contact a hand surgeon in Los Angeles, call us today at (888) 529-1873.
Repetitive motions are often the cause of mild carpal tunnel syndrome. In some cases, work activity modification aimed at reducing excessive gripping, pulling, pushing, or flexion of the wrist can alleviate symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

A splint may be used to help stabilize the wrist and hand. In mild cases of CTS, this can minimize swelling and inflammation that is irritating the median nerve. Patients may wear a splint throughout the day, only at night, or during specific activities, depending on the severity of CTS and personal preference.
Celestone Injection & Oral Steroids
Steroids are a group of compounds that reduce inflammation and can provide mild pain relief. Though oral steroids are available, they typically have a negligible effect in moderate to severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. Steroid injection (Celestone) given at the wrist can alleviate irritation of the median nerve for approximately 1-3 months. However, CTS often returns and patients must decide whether to undergo repeated steroid injection or more invasive surgical correction. Steroids can have serious side effects, including nausea, headaches, and mood swings, and should only be taken under the direction of your doctor.
Non-surgical carpal tunnel treatment is generally a short-term solution. Though some patients with mild CTS will gain temporary relief from the above therapies, it is not uncommon to experience recurrence or worsening of symptoms over time. At the Hand Surgery Center of Excellence, our surgeons are expertly trained in both conservative and surgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome, and will work with you to determine the most effective treatment for your CTS.
